CIS is a non-profit organization, which works on improving the literacy skills of low-income students in K through the 5th grade in Ardmore, OK. The After School Program and the Summer Day Camp are designed to create a fun and safe environment in which children flourish both academically and socially, and to feed the students before they go home. Through these programs, CIS’ counselors work with youth to improve their reading skills. The focus of the After School Program is to help students with homework and literacy before they go home from school. The Summer Day Camp’s focus is not only to improve their literacy skills, but to prevent summer learning loss. Our target population will be students who attend one of four elementary schools (Lincoln, Charles Evans, Jefferson, and Will Rogers) and qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also strive to increase our students’ academic engagement.
In the After School Program, we operate Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 5:30 PM from September 11, 2017 – May 24, 2018. Each day consists of scheduled homework time with help and tutoring available; daily literacy activities that are designed to help raise literacy levels; nutritional activities; physical education; and life skills.
During the Summer Day Camp, we will operate for eight weeks, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The dates of the 2018 Summer Day Camp will be posted soon. Each day consists of reading activities; math activities; physical education; arts and crafts; performing arts; computers and media time; life skills; science; and nutrition..
To ensure we continue to support the literacy development of our students, we conduct reading-fluency tests when students start and end our programs as well as quarterly progress reports during the After School Program. These tests include one minute read-a-loud sessions that allow our members, teachers, and counselors to track their students’ progress. We also conduct pre and post-surveys to determine the level of our students’ academic engagement.
